First Maui Humpback Whale Sighting Of The Season!

Capt. Ryan Hall on Hawaiian Ocean Rafting spotted the first humpback whale of the season off the coast of Lanai on Thursday, October 6, 2011 at around 8:35 a.m.   “We had a humpback whale surface and blow right in front of us several times”  Capt. Hall said.  The whale appeared to be a young male by the way he swam about and “trumpeted” and breached about five or six times in four-minute intervals.

Humpback whale season in Hawaii generally runs from November through May. As many as 12,000 of the whales winter each year in the waters off Hawaii, where endangered humpback whales are protected.Hall said.

Here’s a really great humpback whale photo taken off the coast of Lahaina by Kathy Kopacek of Portland, Oregon.
